In ecology, refers to the average species diversity in a local-scale habitat. It refers to the number of species within a single community and is an index that can check how many different microorganisms are distributed in a sample or group. Various alpha diversity indices, such as Shannon and Simpson, can be used to check the species diversity, and in particular, Shannon algorithm is a widely used in microbiome analysis.
